Harvesting Pine Nuts

Fall is here and the Harvest continues…H’s family has been roasting pinyon pine cones to harvest the pine nuts and they brought some in for us to try out!

Here is to welcoming one more way to learn about plants, seeds and harvesting food!

These cones were initially a sticky challenge. We wore gloves while handling them. The pine nuts have a shell that needs to be removed before eating, and it’s a little finicky. We pulled out the seeds with tweezers the way we did with sunflowers. We then discovered the thrill of using hammers to gently crack the outer shell and expose the edible soft middle.
