Clay as a Creative Medium

Lewis and Clark Intern, Tealah Sampson, partnered with preschoolers for her independent study ceramics class. Tealah’s exploring how children play with clay and how children may express emotions, explore textures, and build shapes or structures. Tealah invited small groups of children to play with clay, offering different things from nature (i.e. pine cones, leaves, rocks, sticks) so children could explore with textures. Tealah also taught children how to hand build things such as bowls and cups. Tealah will take these clay projects to school to fire in the kiln, will present these pieces in her final portfolio for her independent study, and will return these to students to keep.
